Why am I here? What is the purpose of my life? These are the most profound questions of our hearts, and it is particularly pressing in the crisis periods of our lives. The National Office for Vocation works to help people understand that the divine call from God answers these questions, especially in a person’s youthful and searching years, but also in that mid-life crisis period when we re-evaluate where we have been and the ultimate direction of our lives.  

The challenge in the youthful years is attention: there are so many imperatives in a young person’s life, it is difficult for them to hear the intimate voice of the Lord calling them to radical discipleship. In the mid-life period, the difficulty is to help a person discern their call in the face of the diminishing possibilities resulting from their hitherto life choices. My advice to the young, is to seek to address these questions as early as possible, so that they are not disappointed or sorry in their mature years. 

The world needs people who are living joyfully, witnessing to the fullness of a life lived well in the service of God and humanity. This life will not be without difficulties or sadness, but the witness of those of us who are able to radiate the life of Jesus living in us- never finding us without hope, as with those Christians of the early years of our history- is the most powerful and counter-cultural demonstration of our way of life in Christ.  

The resent synod which asked us all to give voice to our hopes and dreams for our Church, is cause for much consolation. Notwithstanding the challenges and sometimes failings of our institutional church, the Holy Spirit is alive and active in our midst. The people of God echo those words from St Paul in his letter to the Romans, “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” (Rm 8:19). The synod synthesis from England and Wales witnesses to the call from the people of God, for a compassionate Church which serves the poor and needy, whilst at the same time, yearns for a share in the formation which many of us have benefited from in our preparation for priesthood or consecrated religious life. The Church has a tremendous history and experience of the spiritual life, of mission, of evangelisation, and the people of God are eager to participate in this mission given to us by Jesus. The children of God are eagerly awaiting for us to accompany them on this journey of transformation, that they may learn how to respond more fully to the invitation of Christ to go out and make disciples of all nations.  

The vocational call to the people of God today is as always, to bring life and friendship with God to all people. I see young men and women, working with older men and women, to build new communities of faith and mission. I see young men and women courageously setting out on the adventure of marriage, called to witness to the love of the Trinity in their lives, with earnest determination to respond to the invitation of God in their daily lives, to be witnesses to love, joy, and hope in today’s world. I see bishops, priests, and religious congregations, working to be faithful witnesses to the Call of their youth, and to understand the legacy they are called to leave, and in many cases to answer that call to respond to the signs of the times in new and creative ways.  

The challenge to the disheartened of today is to see with the eyes of Jesus, to see the kingdom of God, invisible to those who have lost hope, but alive to those who look to the children of the beatitudes for seeds of the future.

Perché sono qui? Qual è lo scopo della mia vita? Sono le domande più profonde del nostro cuore, particolarmente pressanti nei periodi di crisi della nostra vita. L’Ufficio nazionale per le vocazioni lavora per aiutare le persone a capire che la chiamata divina risponde a queste domande, soprattutto negli anni della giovinezza e della ricerca, ma anche nel periodo di crisi della mezza età, quando si rivaluta dove si è stati sino a quel momento e si guarda la direzione finale della propria vita.

La sfida negli anni giovanili è l’attenzione: ci sono così tanti imperativi nella vita di un giovane che è difficile per lui sentire la voce intima del Signore che lo chiama a un discepolato radicale. Nella mezza età, la difficoltà sta nell’aiutare una persona a discernere la propria chiamata di fronte alla diminuzione delle possibilità derivanti dalle scelte di vita fatte finora. Il mio consiglio ai giovani è di cercare di affrontare queste domande il più presto possibile, in modo da non rimanere delusi o dispiaciuti in età matura.

Il mondo ha bisogno di persone che vivano con gioia, testimoniando la pienezza di una vita vissuta bene al servizio di Dio e dell’umanità. Questa vita non sarà priva di difficoltà o di tristezza, ma la testimonianza di coloro che sono in grado di irradiare la vita di Gesù che vive in noi – non trovandoci mai senza speranza, come quei cristiani dei primi anni della nostra storia – è la dimostrazione più potente e controcorrente del nostro modo di vivere in Cristo.

Il recente Sinodo, che ha chiesto a tutti noi di dare voce alle nostre speranze e ai nostri sogni per la Chiesa, è motivo di grande consolazione. Nonostante le sfide e talvolta i fallimenti della nostra Chiesa istituzionale, lo Spirito Santo è vivo e attivo in mezzo a noi. Il popolo di Dio fa eco alle parole di San Paolo nella sua lettera ai Romani: “La creazione infatti attende con impazienza che siano rivelati i figli di Dio” (Rm 8,19). La sintesi sinodale dell’Inghilterra e del Galles testimonia l’appello del popolo di Dio per una Chiesa compassionevole che serva i poveri e i bisognosi e che, allo stesso tempo, partecipi alla formazione di coloro che si preparano al sacerdozio o alla vita religiosa. La Chiesa ha una storia e un’esperienza straordinaria di vita spirituale, di missione, di evangelizzazione e il popolo di Dio è desideroso di partecipare a questa missione donataci da Gesù. I figli di Dio attendono con ansia che li accompagniamo in questo viaggio di trasformazione, affinché imparino a rispondere più pienamente all’invito di Cristo di andare e fare discepoli tutti i popoli.

La chiamata vocazionale per il popolo di Dio oggi è, come sempre, quella di portare la vita e l’amicizia con Dio a tutti gli uomini. Vedo giovani uomini e donne che lavorano con uomini e donne più anziani per costruire nuove comunità di fede e di missione. Vedo giovani uomini e donne che intraprendono con coraggio l’avventura del matrimonio, chiamati a testimoniare l’amore della Trinità nella loro vita, con la ferma determinazione di rispondere all’invito di Dio nella loro vita quotidiana, per essere testimoni di amore, gioia e speranza nel mondo di oggi. Vedo vescovi, sacerdoti e congregazioni religiose che lavorano per essere testimoni fedeli della chiamata verso i loro giovani, per comprendere l’eredità che sono chiamati a lasciare e, in molti casi, per rispondere ai segni dei tempi in modi nuovi e creativi.

La sfida per gli scoraggiati di oggi è quella di vedere con gli occhi di Gesù, di vedere il regno di Dio, invisibile per coloro che hanno perso la speranza, ma vivo per coloro che guardano ai figli delle beatitudini quali semi del futuro.
